★ Bespoke framers · Stable Market, Haslemere · family run since 2004

Framed the way it deserves, by appointment.

Sarah Dunford opened The Haslemere Framing Co. at Stable Market in 2004, set on better choice and better advice than the framing around at the time. Her son Elliot joined the bench in 2019 and started our own hand gilded and hand painted frames. We see everyone one to one, so the design is never rushed.

WHAT WE DO

Four things off one bench, designed with you.

Bespoke picture framing

Pictures, prints, oils, mirrors and special items, designed with you one to one. Over a thousand mouldings on the wall, plus mounts and glass, matched to the piece and to the room it is going in.

Our own hand-finished frames

Since Elliot joined the bench we hand gild and hand paint our own range of mouldings. A finish tuned to your piece, rather than picked from a stock catalogue, with gold, silver and painted edges done in the studio.

Conservation and restoration

Every material we use is Fine Art Trade Guild Level 1 or 2 conservation grade, the wood sustainably sourced. Acid-free mounts that lift the work off the glass, conservation glass, and careful restoration of older and inherited pieces.

Mirrors and unusual pieces

Mirrors made and framed to order, and three-dimensional pieces, textiles, medals and memorabilia float-mounted in deep box frames. If it is awkward to frame, bring it in and we will work it out.

OUR STORY · LATE 90s TO TODAY

A family bench. Sarah came into framing for better choice and better advice; Elliot brought the gilding.

The Haslemere Framing Co. has been a small, independently owned, family business since 2004. The rule has always been the same: conservation-grade materials, a finish chosen for the piece, and time to get it right.

Sarah Dunford picks the design with you. Elliot Dunford hand gilds and hand paints our own mouldings at the bench. Between them, thirty years of framing and a wall of more than a thousand samples to test a finish against your actual work.

“Others have seen what is and asked why. I have seen what could be and asked why not.” The line the studio frames its work by

OUR OWN FINISHES · CONSERVATION

A finish made for your piece, not picked from a catalogue.

A stock moulding is a starting point. Since 2019 we gild and paint our own range in the studio, so the gold can be warmed, the edge toned and the face matched to the work it will hold. The frame stops competing with the picture and starts lifting it.

Underneath the look is conservation. Acid-free mounts that hold the image off the glass, glass chosen to slow fading, all materials to Fine Art Trade Guild Level 1 or 2, the wood sustainably sourced. The kind of care that keeps a piece right for decades.

FAQ

Questions we get at the studio.

Do I need an appointment, or can I just walk in?

We work by appointment, one to one. That way you get our full attention and plenty of time to choose, and you are never rushed. Email or call the studio and we will book you a slot.

Why does bespoke framing cost a little more?

You are paying for conservation-grade materials, a finish chosen for your piece, and the design eye that goes with it. As one customer put it, you may pay a little more than some places, but the service is faultless and the value is great.

Can you frame unusual things, mirrors, textiles, medals, memorabilia?

Yes. Mirrors are made and framed to order, and three-dimensional or awkward pieces are float-mounted in deep box frames. Bring it in and we will work out how best to hold and show it.

Can you restore or reframe an older or inherited piece?

Often, yes. We take great care over the conservation of customers’ artwork, and reframe inherited pieces to the highest conservation standards. Bring the piece to the studio and we will tell you honestly what it needs.

What does conservation grade actually mean for my picture?

Acid-free, archival materials that protect the work for decades, a mount that lifts the image off the glass so it cannot stick or burn, and glass chosen to slow fading. All our materials are Fine Art Trade Guild Level 1 or 2 grade.
